Marc Lecuit, MD, PhD, is a microbiologist and an infectious diseases physician. He is the Director of the Biology of Infection Unit at Institut Pasteur and Inserm (U1117), and the Head of the National Reference Centre and WHO Collaborating Centre Listeria.
Vieillissement et longévité
D’après l’OMS, entre 2000 et 2050, la proportion de la population mondiale de plus de 60 ans doublera pour passer d’environ 11% à 22%. Actuellement la plupart des personnes âgées décèdent de maladies non […]

The Southeast Asia encephalitis project
LabEx IBEID – Integrative Biology of Emerging Infectious Diseases
Presentation Le but du projet Biologie Intégrative des Maladies Infectieuses Emergentes (IBEID), coordonné par les professeurs Philippe Sansonetti et Pascale Cossart, est de développer une structure pour anticiper et lutter contre les maladies […]
An infection is defined by the deleterious consequences of the interactions between a pathogen and a host. Thus, studying the biology of infection reveals critical properties of hosts and pathogens, and is a way […]
Infections remain a major cause of mortality in humans. New infections are emerging, and resistance to antimicrobial drugs is widespread and expanding. There is thus an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic strategies based on rationally-designed drugs […]
Communauté des médecins affiliés de l’Institut Pasteur

Think tank: Mucosal Immunology
The Think tank Mucosal Immunology gathers several research units form the departments of immunology, microbiology, cellular biology and epidemilogy and infection, as well as from the Institut Imagine (Necker) and Hôpital Paul Brousse. It […]
Microbial translocation across the intestinal epithelium (ANR, Organolist)
We use intestinal organoids, live imaging and molecular/cell biology approaches to study Listeria monocytogenes translocation across the intestinal epithelium.
Host responses to microbial intestinal invasion, impact on microbial dissemination
We study the impact of the portal of entry of microbes in the intestine on host responses and microbial dissemination. To this end, we combine in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro systems, as well […]
Listeria monocytogenes invasion of the placenta
We study the host and bacterial factors involved in Listeria monocytogenes invasion of the placenta. To this end, we combine in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro systems, as well as imaging, cell biology, […]
Listeria monocytogenes invasion of the central nervous system
We study the host and bacterial factors involved in Listeria monocytogenes invasion of the central nervous system. To this end, we combine in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro systems, as well as imaging, […]
Subversive pro- and anti-inflammation trade-offs promote infection by Listeria monocytogenes (Infect-ERA, PROANTILIS)
Listeriosis is a leading cause of death from food-transmitted bacterial pathogens. It can cause infections in the blood stream and brain, and lead to abortion, neonatal infection and fetal death. The causative organism, Listeria […]
When Gut Bacteria Changes Brain Functions
We are interested in deciphering the relationships that link gut microbiota with the immune system and the brain. So far, the mechanisms underlying these interplay, and most importantly their consequences, remain largely unknown. Therefore […]
Human and ruminant neurolisteriosis: a comparative study (Swiss National Science Foundation, Sinergia)
Neurolisteriosis is a common and frequently fatal complication of Listeria monocytogenes infection in human and ruminants. It has a high impact on human and animal health, but only little is known about its pathogenesis. […]
The LISTERIAGEN project aims to identify host genetic factors associated with susceptibility to listeriosis.
MONALISA: A Multicentric Observational National Analysis on Listeriosis and Listeria (PHRC)
MONALISA is a prospective national study on invasive listeriosis. It aims to identify risk and prognostic factors for invasive listeriosis and to dissect the clinical and biological features of each form of infection (septicemia, central nervous […]
Chikungunya virus pathogenesis
Structural and functional studies of Chikungunya virus entry into host cells Deciphering Chikungunya virus cell biology by high-throughput / high-content screening Chikungunya virus infection of fibroblasts Chikungunya virus and the central nervous system infection
Enterovirus EV71 pathogenesis
This project aims to study the pathogenesis of EV71-associated encephalitis. It combines in vitro and in vivo approaches.
Our main objective is to increase the knowledge regarding the human virome during homeostasis and diseases. We mainly focus on: immunocompromised patients, where new pathogens and new associations between known pathogens and diseases at found at higher frequency than […]
