In a globalized world heading for a post-antibiotic era, refined understanding of human, animal and environmental interactions with pathogenic bacteria is of utmost importance. The primary aim of our research is to discover bacterial and host factors playing a critical role in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and whose characterization will help develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. We take a combination of multiscale models and systems biology approaches to investigate host-pathogen interactions, identify biomarkers and targets, and ultimately design novel infection control tools through cross-disciplinary collaborations. One major focus is to decipher mechanisms of systemic infection evolved by Yersinia pestis and other important human pathogenic bacteria.
