Our work is focused on understanding host-parasite interactions during the pre-erythrocytic and pre-symptomatic phase of malaria. We leverage rodent models, hepatocyte culture systems, and single-cell-based approaches to unravel the mechanisms of dormancy, relapse, and transmission.

We seek to understand whether malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites i) use sensing mechanisms to select the hepatocyte where its replication will unfold and/or ii) promote host metabolic reprogramming upon invasion of the host cell. To address these questions, we are employing advanced single-cell live imaging approaches and bioengineered in vitro human liver systems.
