I was born in Belgium and obtained my Master degree from the University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (France). I completed my PhD studies at the Institut Pasteur, Paris (France) on the regulation of the expression of the central genes of the Escherichia coli PEP-dependent phosphotransferase system. During my postdoctoral fellowship, I moved from fundamental to medical microbiology and studied the control of the expression of the pili of the bacterial pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Since 1995, I am studying the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori. I am currently an Associate Professor at the Institut Pasteur and head of the Helicobacter Pathogenesis group since 2008. From 2014 to 2019, I was director of the Microbiology department of the Institut Pasteur.
