Jean-Marc Cavaillon is honorary professor of Institut Pasteur where he made his whole career after his post-doctoral training at the University of Toronto (Canada). He has been head of a research Unit “Cytokines & Inflammation” (2001-2017), director of the Department “Infection and Epidemiology” (2006-2009), and president of the Evaluation Committee of the Scientists of Institut Pasteur (2012-2015). He has been president of the “International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society” (1998-2000), and president of the “European Shock Society” (2016-2018). He has been Associate-Editor of Cytokine (2002-2009), Associate-Editor of Shock (2014-2019) and member of different Editorial Boards of journals (e.g. Journal of Infectious Diseases, Frontiers in Immunology, Scientific Reports, Journal of Intensive Medicine). He is presently scientific officer at the French National Research Agency in charge of the Covid-19 programs and the antibioresistance program.
He has been very much involved in local and international teaching, and was director of the course “General Immunology and Immunophysiology of Infections” (Inst. Pasteur; 1997-2003). He has an extensive expertise on inflammation, sepsis, septic shock, and innate immunity, particularly on cytokines, macrophages and on bacterial endotoxins. He has been very much involved in translational research, studying the immune status of patients with sepsis and other severe inflammatory disorders.
Prof. Jean-Marc Cavaillon has published 170 scientific articles, 114 reviews and 59 chapters in books (h-index = 63). He wrote different books: the very first book in French on cytokines (1993, 1996). A book “Sepsis and non-infectious systemic inflammation” with Dr. C. Adrie (2009); a book in 4 volumes “Inflammation – From molecular and cellular mechanisms to the clinic” with Prof. Mervyn Singer (2018), and a book in French “La flamme salvatrice. Il était une fois l’inflammation” (2017). He has written different historical articles on some giants of sciences (Metchnikoff, Boivin, Ruffer, Bizzozero, Semmelweis, & Bordet).
