About
Description of the activity:
The past decade has been revolutionary for the field of ancient genomics. The advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies, and the development of better techniques for recovering and sequencing highly degraded DNA from archaeological material, brought unprecedented opportunities to investigate species and individuals from centuries to millennia ago. This has triggered a rapidly expanding myriad of research opportunities, including reconstructing human, animal and plant population histories worldwide, tracing back genetic changes acquired over millennia that greatly impacted our health, studying the emergence, spread and evolution of major human pathogens involved in past epidemics and understanding how the human microbiome was shaped and re-shaped throughout our history. The activity will be focused on sharing and discussing the main contributions obtained over the past few years from the analysis of ancient genomes, including humans, domesticated animals and microbes, from the stories and experiences of experts that are greatly contributing to the expansion of this fascinating field.
