About
Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most urgent threats to public health given its increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents including carbapenems, considered as last-resort antibiotics. In this project we aim to understand the ecological, epidemiological and evolutionary factors that contribute to the emergence of this bacterial pathogen. We analyze the distribution of Klebsiella species and strains in varied habitats including hospital and community acquired infections, animals, human carriage and the environment. We combine genomic and phenotypic approaches to define the phylogenetic population structure, to identify and characterize emerging lineages, and to determine the contribution of mobile genetic elements to the evolution of hyper virulent and multi drug resistant clones.
