Progress has been achieved in curative treatments for Hepatitis C virus (HCV), however efficient cures are needed for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Since these pathogens have limited species tropism, infecting humans but not mice, understanding the infectious life cycle, pathological mechanisms, and testing novel drug strategies or vaccine candidates has been problematic. To overcome these limitations, we have been developing “humanized” murine models that harbor human cells, rendering mice susceptible to these infections to study immune responses and virus-host crosstalk.
