Stéphane Bretagne is Professor of Medicine at Paris Diderot University, chair of Parasitology and Mycology. He is head of the Parasitology-Mycology laboratories of the Saint Louis University Hospital and Deputy Director of the French National Reference Center for Invasive Mycoses and Antifungals since 2012 after 10 years as a collaborator. He is also responsible for the Parasitology-Mycology section of the DES (diplôme d’études spécialisées) of medical biology for residents of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Paris area.
Stéphane Bretagne received his M.D. and Ph.D from the Paris 12 School of Medicine (France). As soon as the early 90’s, he has developed diagnostic tools for translational research in medical mycology with focus on molecular biology. He is regularly invited to international congresses and ECIL committee for his expertise in the diagnosis of invasive fungal diseases. He has published over 185 papers, including invited contributions to several book chapters. He is a founder member in 2005 of the European Aspergillus PCR Initiative (EAPCRI) laboratory working group for the development of a consensus on the use of PCR for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis.
His main interests are diagnosis and management of invasive fungal diseases in immunocompromised patients. After some work in tropical diseases and parasitology, he focused on the interaction between respiratory epithelium and environmental fungi, mainly Aspergillus fumigatus but also Mucorales
