“Temporal construction and deconstruction of neuronal identities in development and disease: a human pluripotent stem cell perspective”

Targeted differentiations of pluripotent stem cells open new avenues to study the development, evolution and disease of the human nervous system. Using this approach, we are deciphering the mechanisms controlling the HOX-mediated temporal specification of neuronal diversity during spinal cord elongation in mouse and human. Elucidation of these developmental principles provides us with strategies to engineer specific neuronal populations to approach the molecular basis of the selective resistance or vulnerability of closely related neuronal subtypes in neurodevelopmental motor neuron diseases.
