Flyer : MOOC_VIRAL_HEPATITIS_2022

Hepatitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the liver. Viral Hepatitis are very common worldwide, mainly caused by five different viruses (Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E). Mortality is related mainly to chronicity leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. This occurs mostly for hepatitis B, B-D and C, viruses transmitted by blood and reaching mainly drug users, inmates and men having sex with men.

The mortality of viral hepatitis remains high through the world (1.6 million death in 2016 according to WHO) particularly since access to screening, prevention and efficient medications remains critically low in many developping countries, but not only.

In this MOOC, you will find the latest developments on the intimate structure and pathophysiology of hepatic viruses, as well as the epidemiology and clinical courses of hepatitis. You will learn about prevention of hepatitis A, B and D by immunization and about the most recent developments of efficient treatments of hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Finally, you will learn about the many public health issues of viral hepatitis and the ambitious plan of WHO to eradicate viral hepatitis by 2030.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Summarize the virology and pathophysiology of the five differents viruses
  • Describe the epidemiology and diseases progression leading sometimes to fibrosis and cancer
  • Define recent progresses in vaccines and efficient treatments
  • Explains why too few people have access to screening and treatments
  • Discuss how WHO expects to eradicate viral hepatitis by 2030

This MOOC is part of the Online Diploma of infectious Diseases of the Institut Pasteur DNM2IP.
