Legionella pneumophila et son flagelle, bactérie responsable de pneumopathie aigue grave. Bactérie de l'environnement , l'émergence récente de cette maladie s'explique par son affinité pour les systèmes modernes d'alimentation en eau comme les tours de refroidissement. Image colorisée.

Des chercheurs de l’Institut Pasteur, du CNRS, de l’Institut Curie et de l’Inserm, ont mis en évidence un mécanisme qui permet à la bactérie Legionella pneumophila (agent principal de la légionellose) de « reprogrammer » l’expression des gènes des cellules qu’elle infecte. Ce mécanisme, jamais observé auparavant, facilite la survie et la prolifération de Legionella pneumophila pendant l’infection. Ces travaux apportent de précieuses informations sur la régulation de l’expression des gènes, ainsi qu’un éclairage important sur les tactiques employées par les bactéries pour manipuler les cellules hôtes. Ces recherches sont publiées en ligne le 17 avril sur le site de Cell Host & Microbe.
