Les protéines IFITM (interferon-induced transmembrane proteins) font partie du système immunitaire inné et inhibent l’entrée de nombreux virus dans la cellule hôte. Elles agissent en modifiant les propriétés des membranes cellulaires, perturbant ainsi la fusion des virions. Dans le cas du VIH, elles exercent un effet antiviral supplémentaire dans la cellule infectée, en infiltrant les virions nouvellement produits et en diminuant leur potentiel infectieux. La structure, la localisation et les modifications post-traductionnelles régulant l’activité antivirale des protéines IFITM ont été récemment caractérisées. En plus des effets antiviraux, ces protéines possèdent d’autres activités au sein de la cellule. Dans cette revue, nous résumons les connaissances actuelles sur les différentes propriétés des protéines IFITM.
