Abstract 
Except for bacterial species that undergo developmental programs, bacteria have been traditionally viewed as clonal populations of identical cells. In fact, bacterial genetics and physiology have routinely employed batch cultures and individual colonies assuming that all cells were identical. However, phenotypic heterogeneity is a common phenomenon in the bacterial world. In certain cases, cell-to-cell differences are merely caused by noise. In other cases, howewer, phenotypic heterogeneity reflects the formation of bacterial lineages. The mechanisms underlying lineage formation can be genetic or epigenetic. Examples of epigenetic lineage formation will be presented, and their potentially adaptive value will be discussed.
