The Microbial Evolutionary Genomics unit (head Eduardo Rocha) at the Institut Pasteur in Paris is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position. The researcher will work within a multidisciplinary team (both computational and experimental biologists), that focuses on understanding the evolution of microbial genomes, particularly through the action of mobile genetic elements and defence systems. He/She will be working with Marie Touchon (Institut Pasteur) in collaboration with Olivier Tenaillon (Institut Cochin). Institut Pasteur stands as a prominent international research institution fostering a dynamic and multidisciplinary scientific environment. With a diverse team of over 2500 individuals hailing from 60 different nationalities, our central Paris location provides quick and easy access to highly skilled colleagues and cutting-edge facilities.
The postdoctoral project
The project will leverage the expanding reservoirs of bacterial genome data by integrating big data techniques in comparative genomics and phylogenomics. Its overarching goal is to enhance our understanding of bacterial diversification, thereby advancing the current state of the field. While the initial emphasis is on Escherichia coli, a medically significant model species, the project will progressively broaden its scope to encompass various bacterial species. The primary goal is to quantify barriers to gene flow that contribute to the intricate population structure within E. coli species. Furthermore, the project endeavors to explore the evolutionary forces shaping the emergence and maintenance of successful multi-drug resistance E. coli clones. The long-term goal is to better understand the evolutionary processes driving microbial diversification to help us develop more accurate models to simulate bacterial genome evolution.
Applicant’s profiles
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a completed PhD in genomics, microbiology, bioinformatics, or a related field. The candidate should have expertise in evolutionary genomics, computational biology, and/or population genetics, and some experience on the analysis of genomics data from bacterial genomes. Knowledge of horizontal gene transfert, mobile genetic elements and defence systems would be a significant asset. He/she should be proficient in programming languages commonly used in genomics research and experience working with bioinformatics software and computer clusters. The successful candidate will be able to influence the direction of the project depending on his or her profile and strengths.
Conditions of the postdoctoral position
The postdoc position will ideally start in the first half of 2024, but the exact time can be discussed. The position is fully funded by French Agence National de la Recherche (ANR) for two years, with the possibility of an extension for a third year.
Application Process and more information
To apply or request more information, please send to Marie Touchon in a single PDF document: (1) a detailed CV including your full publication list, (2) a cover letter explaining your research interests, skills and experience relevant to the position, and your motivations to join us (1-2 pages), and (3) up to three references who we’ll contact to obtain advices on your application to
Please note that only candidates who will have sent all of the above will be considered for the position. The deadline for submitting applications is January 15, 2024.
