Abstract :
My group is focused on studying the cell biology of human enteroviruses, especially enterovirus B group viruses, including echoviruses and coxsackieviruses (see Marjomäki et al. Viruses, 2015 and references therein). In addition to causing high amount of acute infections worldwide, enterovirus B group viruses are associated with chronic diseases such as type 1 diabetes, cardiomyopathies and atherosclerosis. Despite of their significance, there are no common drugs or vaccination against them. Fundamental cell biology studies are thus needed to understand the infectious entry pathways and to develop novel antiviral strategies. My group is presently focusing on elucidating the host cell factors that affect virus stability, or promote viral uncoating and genome release from endosomes. The studies include confocal and electron microscopy, spectroscopy and biochemical approaches. In addition, my group has developed novel probes for enteroviruses as well as several cellular and viral assays to address different steps in virus uncoating, stability and infection. My group has also contributed to vaccine development and developing quantitative microscopy tools, such as the open-source software, BioImageXD for processing, analysis and animation of 3D/4D image data (www.bioimagexd.net). Recent major focus in the laboratory is to study the mechanistic basis of potential antiviral molecules that have recently been found from several molecular and drug screens.
