Antifungal treatments in patients expose fungal pathogens to repeated contacts with antifungal agents. Under such selection pressures, the pathogens evolve several resistance mechanisms that are necessary for survival in the host. In this presentation, antifungal resistance development will be discussed in several Candida species. Another phenomenon linked to the adaptation of fungal pathogens to antifungal drugs is known as antifungal tolerance. Since antifungal tolerance may have an impact on drug efficacy, it became relevant to understand the associated mechanisms. Understanding of both drug resistance and drug tolerance mechanisms is greatly facilitated by genomic approaches.
