A little guide for advanced search:

  • Tip 1. You can use quotes "" to search for an exact expression.
    Example: "cell division"
  • Tip 2. You can use + symbol to restrict results containing all words.
    Example: +cell +stem
  • Tip 3. You can use + and - symbols to force inclusion or exclusion of specific words.
    Example: +cell -stem
e.g. searching for members in projects tagged cancer

Martin found his way to the electron microscopy by doing light microscopy. At the end of his study of plant biology he did a research project in the Medical Biochemistry II, in Göttingen, Germany. Within this project he did a lot of confocal microscopy to characterize monoclonal antibodies. As informative as this technique is, it lacked for him the total background of the cell. Therefore Martin was happy to have the opportunity to do a PhD in Hans Geuze’s lab in Utrecht, The Netherlands, supervised by Prof. Judith Klumperman and Prof. Ger Strous. In the TEM he found the missing background of cellular structures back. He did a lot of immuno labeling on thawed cryo sections and realized that no imaging technique is perfect because the ribosomes and microtubules were missing with this approach. After his post doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Bruno Goud at the Institut Curie, Paris, he joined in 2005 the electron microscopy laboratory of the IP. This allowed him to learn a lot about sample preparation for TEM. By now he manages to visualize microtubules and ribosomes. He also discovered that there are so many more species from the evolutionary tree to be observed. A lot to see…
