Abstract :
The collective behaviour of African trypanosomes on semi-solid surfaces, known as social motility, creates symmetrical patterns as the parasites divide and migrate. The self-organisation of communities of trypanosomes is presumed to be due to migration factors and/or repellents that they release. Is this something relevant to their life cycle or a beautiful artefact? We have been investigating what these factors are, how they are perceived by the parasites and what their function is likely to be in the context of their passage through their insect host, the tsetse fly.
