Humans can survive bloodstream infection by African trypanosomes, such as Trypanosoma brucei brucei, owing to the trypanosome-killing activity of serum ApoL1. The two trypanosome subspecies that are responsible for human African trypanosomiasis, T. b. rhodesiense and T. b. gambiense, can evade this defence by expressing distinct resistance proteins. I will present the history and our latest findings on these resistance mechanisms and on the ApoL1-mediated cell death of T. b. brucei.
