In our study published in Nature Medicine (Koukouli et al. 2017), we showed that human mutations of nicotinic receptors associated with psychiatric disorders modulate hypofrontality through a hierarchical circuit of inhibitory neurons and chronic nicotine administration reverses this hypofrontality. This finding paves the way to new therapeutic strategies targeting nicotinic receptors in mental disorders.
