Multi-site electrodes have become essential tools for simultaneous recording of multiple neurons in vivo. Here, we aim to cover the basic knowledge needed to set up such recordings in the cerebellar cortex and nuclei, from the physical principles governing the extracellular signal to the practical protocols for recording and processing neurophysiological data. We discuss the different types of electrodes and the criteria for choosing a recording system. We then provide protocols for building simple and cost-effective fixed implants or for building custom microdrives and performing brain implant surgeries. Finally, we provide guidance for spike sorting, including identification of Purkinje cell complex spikes.
