About
The Multitudes of Mosquito Viruses and Their Impact on Arbovirus Disease Ecology
Mosquitoes harbour a remarkable diversity of viruses, yet most of them do not infect humans and animals. Some of these mosquito-specific viruses can either inhibit or enhance the replication of co-infecting pathogenic viruses, such as dengue and Zika viruses. Despite their potential impact on the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases, we know little about these viruses beyond their genome sequences, owing to metagenomics studies. The MULTITUDES project will explore the biology and ecology of mosquito-specific viruses and how they interact with their mosquito host. The insights from this project will contribute towards a deeper understanding of the disease ecology of mosquito-transmitted viruses within the One Health framework.
