Short abstract about your presentation (a few lines will do): Genome editing approaches can be used as basic tools to understand key traits in the mosquito that are relevant to its capacity as a vector of disease. In certain formulations these same basic tools can be repurposed as selfish genetic elements designed to deliberately invade mosquito populations and compromise their ability to support parasite transmission. I will give an overview on how we are using these tools both for the suppression of Anopheles species that vector the malaria parasite and what the same tools can tell us about the genetic basis of insecticide resistance and how this too could inform current vector control approaches.
