Our Faculty Mini-Sabbatical Program is designed to exchange top academic talents from the Institut Pasteur and the University of California San Francisco for one- to three-month visits to build knowledge and new partnerships.

The purpose of sabbatical leave is to provide an opportunity for faculty members to engage in scholarly, creative, professional, research, or other academic activities that will enhance the faculty member’s further contributions to their institution and the world in the name of scientific research and excellence towards pandemic preparedness. In this sense, the visiting scientists will get the opportunity to interact with leading scientists from either institution on their research programs.

These mini-sabbaticals open to applications throughout the year and their time at the host institution is based on the availability of the sabbatical housing.

Funded by the Institut Pasteur – UCSF QBI Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, faculty will be hosted full-time from 1 to 3 months at the host institution. Their travel costs will be covered, as well as housing and, if hosted in San Francisco, will receive a supplementary stipend.

The faculty member is expected to be onsite during their sabbatical, give at least one institutional seminar, and engage actively in everyday exchanges with students, postdocs and faculty.

Pre-requisites:

You must be a faculty member at UCSF or a scientist (researcher or engineer) working on the parisian campus of Institut Pasteur to apply to the Mini-Sabbatical Program.

Here’s how to apply:

  1. The candidate must fill out a short form for evaluation by the Institut Pasteur – UCSF QBI Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases scientific sabbatical program Committee.
  2. Please upload a cover letter and your CV to the form. The cover letter should emphasize your collaboration opportunity and how you would benefit from this sabbatical.
  3. Indicate in which lab you wish to be embedded during your mini-sabbatical. A commitment letter from the head of the lab that will host you must be uploaded to the form.

The sabbatical is intended to allow UCSF-QBI and Institut Pasteur scientists to expand or make a transition in their research programs via the sabbatical leave and then develop that research program in their own lab(s). This sabbatical will also enable the candidate to acquire new scientific or technical expertise, facilitate the investigator’s competitiveness, and potentially lead to transformational impacts in a wide array of topics, including, viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, mechanisms of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology, modeling or any combination thereof. Proposals addressing major open questions at the intersections of these disciplines, are of particular interest to the program.

  • Proposals should also demonstrate a strong record of prior accomplishment, a compelling plan for professional development that will enable the candidate to forge a new direction in their sabbatical, and a strong rationale for why this support is needed to become competitive in a new research area or direction.
  • Deadline: proposal accepted on a rolling basis – 1st deadline July 13, 2023

The goals of this sabbatical initiative are to broaden the scope and horizon of faculty member’s research interests and provide a foundation for future research collaborations. Participants also acquire an understanding of the Institut Pasteur – UCSF QBI Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases research interests and the technological implications thereof, thus enhancing the abilities of scientists in both institutions to pursue and obtain together funding for research from institutional, government, private sector or philanthropic sources.
