Abstract
The Gene Ontology (GO) is a comprehensive knowledgebase of gene functions, which is in a structured form for supporting computational analysis of genes, biological systems, and experimental “omics” data. It is used in tens of thousands of publications each year. The wide applicability and ease of using the GO, however, is a double-edged sword: GO can also be easy to use inappropriately or misinterpret. I will discuss important considerations for anyone using the GO knowledgebase, emphasizing our ongoing work to improve GO based on input from the scientific community.
