						About
40 years after Carl Woese and George Fox proposed the progenote concept and the tripartite division of the living world; did their proposals successfully pass the test of time? I will discuss comparative genomic data and recent phylogenetic analyses performed in our unit that allow answering related this question such as: was LUCA (the Last Universal Common Ancestor) a (hyperthermophilic) progenote; or else: is it true that eukaryotes emerged from Asgard archaea? I will also briefly discuss the position of viruses in the tree of life.
