Overview
The Institut Pasteur FabLab (FLIP) design and produces devices for Pasteur researchers and help them develop their own prototypes to resolve research questions. The platform provides access to rapid prototyping facilities (3D printer, CNC, CAD, tool bench, etc.), offers trainings to researchers for autonomous use of the equipments, and our engineering expertise to design and make devices with the research team. As a FabLab, we wish to be a creative, collaborative co-working space where researchers work together with the lab team and other researchers to exchange skills, ideas and techniques. Methodology and collaboration
The Fab Lab aims to provide expert support throughout the project cycle, from identification of needs to prototype design. The Fab Lab and its team are on hand to offer guidance and specific training and to work with you to get your projects off the ground. With specialists in a wide range of fields and machines and software specially designed for prototyping, such as 3D printers and numerical control machines, we provide iterative design of instruments and equipment made with and for researchers and labs in many fields such as cell culture, imaging, microfluidics and virology. We also provide support for external production, contact with a lab developing the most suited production technology, etc. To best accommodate your needs, we offer three ways to collaborate :
Open access and DIY
After initial training that gives researchers access the Open facility and a specific training for each technology they wish to use, they can book and use the equipments independently. Support is provided for any open access project.
Consultancies
After initial discussion to understand the scientific question and needs in order to establish basic design constraints, we organize design and produce the prototype in a iterative and collaborative process. Projects development is not limited to the FabLab facility and can use the support of other platforms if needed. The team will manage the production through the different entities involved.
Projects
Same as consultancies, for longer and more exploratory projects, where we take on more of the workload.
Acknowledgements
Please acknowledge the facility if you use the tools we worked on or the advices we share with you during these open-desks. Something like this for instance: “We acknowledge the help of the FabLab Institut Pasteur for this work.”
We need acknowledgements for the recognition of the facility activities and their perpetuation.
Facilities
The Pasteur Fab Lab has three facilities:
- an Open FabLab, set up at Metchnikoff rdc. Here users have free access to CNC machines and 3D printers once they have completed training,
- the mechanical workshop, whose suite of instruments will be gradually expanded to meet ever-increasing requirements,
- the 5 axis lab, equiped with a DMU 50, 5 axis 18000 tr/min CNC machine DMG Mori
