David R M Smith is an infectious disease epidemiologist and modeller interested in epidemics. He is a tenured research fellow (chargé de recherche) in public health at France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and is based in the Department of Global Health at Institut Pasteur.
David develops statistical and mathematical models to better understand infectious disease dynamics and evaluate population-level impacts of public health interventions in global health contexts. He has research interests in antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases, including Lassa fever, chikungunya and COVID-19. His main ongoing projects involve embedding infectious disease models within health-economic models to inform public health policy. These include:
— Developing a methodological framework to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of antibiotic policy interventions
— Estimating the global burden of disease and the potential value of vaccination for emerging infectious diseases
— Integrating behavioural and epidemiological data to anticipate pandemic risk and optimize infectious disease surveillance
David holds a PhD in public health and biostatistics from Université Paris Saclay and was previously senior researcher at the University of Oxford. He is interested in supervising graduate students and post-docs, and currently co-supervises 3 PhD students based at Oxford:
— Hahyun Lee
— Madison Luick
— Natasha Salant
