Alexandra Famiglietti is a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Yusuke Shimakawa (Institut Pasteur) and Dr. Shevanthi Nayagam (Imperial College London) in the Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit. In her research, she employs diverse interdisciplinary methodologies to evaluate viral hepatitis diagnostic testing strategies for preventing mother-to-child transmission in resource-limited settings. Alexandra’s research integrates diagnostic validation, health economic analysis, environmental impact assessment, and mathematical modeling to provide comprehensive evidence on the clinical performance, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of point-of-care testing approaches. By combining traditional epidemiological methods with health economics, environmental science, and implementation research, her work aims to inform evidence-based policy decisions for maternal and child health programs in resource-limited contexts.
Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, Alexandra worked in the Clinical Diabetes Research Team at King’s College London and in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the US National Cancer Institute. She was awarded a Master of Public Health with distinction from Imperial College London in 2022, and a Bachelor of Science in Global Health and Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Southern California in 2020.
