About

Teun Bousema – Radboud university medical center (The Netherlands)

Male and female gametocytes are needed for successful transmission of Plasmodium infections to mosquitoes. In P. falciparum gametocytes frequently circulate in low yet infectious densities and persist after antimalarial treatment. The recent development of a sensitive molecular assay to quantify male and female gametocytes at densities below the microscopic threshold for detection will be presented and its utility in epidemiological and clinical studies.
