Offer description

A postdoctoral position with 24 months of funding is available immediately for an advanced scientist in audiology, biophysics or neurosciences at the Centre for Research and Innovation in Humans (CeRIAH) co-directed by Professor Paul Avan and Professor Hung Thai-Van at the Institut de l’Audition, Institut Pasteur, in Paris, France.
We are seeking an outstanding, highly motivated postdoctoral fellow for several projects on fine characterization of auditory impairments by developing innovative sets of objective audiological measurements in humans.
The common goal of these large-scale project is to improve the early detection of hearing loss (age-related and induced by noise trauma) to better manage their effects on public health.

Institut de l’Audition and CeRIAH

The Institut de l’Audition (Hearing Institute) is an interdisciplinary research institute with the objective of promoting integrative approaches to basic auditory neuroscience, developing innovative diagnostic tools and preventive and curative treatments for hearing disabilities. The Institut de l’Audition brings together world-class researchers from various fields, including neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, auditory cognition, genetics and genomics, cell biology and gene therapy. Most teams associate fundamental researchers and MDs and conduct research protocols applicable to humans with clinicians as co-investigators.
The Centre for Research and Innovation in Human Audiology (CeRIAH), part of the Institut de l’Audition, is a centre dedicated to conducting research protocols on human volunteers (excluding clinical drug trials). Launched in March 2021, the CERIAH moved into its own premises at the heart of the Pasteur campus at the beginning of 2023. With a comprehensive range of cutting-edge equipment, a dedicated staff of research audiologists, engineers and project managers, and expertise in all areas of hearing science, CERIAH aims to improve understanding of hearing disorders, with a view to developing treatments.

Mission

The postdoctoral fellow will work mainly on a large-scale project aiming to better understand the mechanisms of age-related hearing loss in relation with specific genotypes.

  • First, the candidate will have to master the basic exploration tools of the inner ear systems, namely otoacoustic emissions, audiometry, auditory and vestibular electrophysiology and vestibulocochlear tests and psychoacoustics,
  • The candidate will also participate to the data collection in several hundreds of participants with age-related hearing loss, in collaboration with a European research group and the experts of the CERIAH,
  • From this data, the challenge for the candidate will be to identify phenotype patterns corresponding to groups of genotype mutations.

Qualifications

Candidate profile:

  • A PhD in physics, biophysics, biology, neurosciences or related field is required,
  • Experience in audiology and/or recording of sensory information from peripheral cells will be highly appreciated,
  • Experience or interest in research involving the human person,
  • Some fluency in the French language will be necessary to conduct the tests on volunteers.

Candidates should be experienced in the use of at least some of the techniques mentioned. The scope of the work can be tailored according to the candidate interests and skills.

We are looking for a reliable and persistent person with a solution-seeking approach to problems and people skills.

The position will be financed for two years with possible prolongation according to performance and grant application outcomes. The project will be conducted in the beautiful city of Paris, in the brand-new Institut de l’Audition which also may provide exciting career opportunities for young talented researchers. Interested candidates should submit a CV and cover letter mentioning a few referees who might provide a letter of recommendation.

Starting: as soon as possible

Net salary: 30 000 €/y minimum, according to experience
