Internship Opportunity #1
Big Data Image Processing in Virtual Reality

Description

The DIVA project aids scientific users in the interpretation of their imaging data using virtual reality (VR). This multidisciplinary project is localized between two laboratories :

  • Light-Based observation and control of cellular organisation (Institut Curie)
  • Decision and Bayesian Computation (Institut Pasteur).

Today in scientific research, we commonly deal with large volumetric imaging data that can easily surpass 10 GB. This imposes a major difficulty for visualization, as entire images cannot be loaded to graphics card memory (typically < 10 GB). A solution to tackling this challenge is the development of adaptive resolution techniques that involve downscaling parts of the image that are not being visualized (e.g. Google Maps but for volumes in VR). Moreoever, vast regions of imaging data can be empty which is why we envision content-specific strategies. We are proposing an exciting internship opportunity that will focus on the development of adaptive modes of volume representation.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who works well in teams and is, notably, interested in contributing to a highly interdisciplinary project.

Human-Data Interaction for Scientists and Doctors

Description

The DIVA project aids scientific users in the interpretation of their imaging data using virtual reality (VR). This multidisciplinary project is localized between two laboratories :

  • Decision and Bayesian Computation (Institut Pasteur).

Today there are no standards on how to interact with data in VR. Hence, a major objective in our development goals is to develop easy-to-use interfaces and agreeable use experiences for scientists and doctors when visualization and analyzing their volumetric images (e.g. magnetic resonance images, confocal microscopy, etc.). We are proposing an exciting internship project that focuses on enhancing human-data interaction by means of nimble interface design.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who works well in teams and is, notably, interested in contributing to a highly interdisciplinary project.

Enhanced Volumetric Visualizations using Machine Learning

Description

We are proposing a 3 to 6 month internship for a motivated student to contribute to the DIVA project. This role involves the development of efficient learning systems to automatically enhance visual representations of volumetric images (e.g. confocal microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging). The project will be a unique interdisciplinary learning experience where the candidate will familiarize themselves with deployable machine learning solutions, scientific imaging and VR technologies in a large-scale research project.

The successful candidate will have experience in machine learning (e.g. SVMs, neural networks) and related packages (e.g. scikit learn, TensorFlow). We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who works well in teams and is, notably, interested in contributing to a highly interdisciplinary project.
