Title: Evolution and Transmission of MDR E. coli
Abstract: Not all E. coli are equal when it comes to be multi-drug resistant. Despite sharing largely the same ecology, and being exposed to similar levels of antimicrobials and resistance plasmids, MDR is concentrated in a small number of E. coli lineages and clones which are globally disseminated. Our group has tried to address what makes these clones and lineages fundamentally different from other E. coli such that they became successful MDR lineages. This talk will combine published and unpublished data to show a hypothesis that MDR is the endpoint of successful emergence of these clones, and that their true success lies in their ability to outcompete and colonise the intestinal tract.
