Type I IFNs (IFNα/β) are rapidly produced in response to pathogens and cellular aggressions. As a result, these cytokines promote the early development of innate and adaptive immune responses. However, their immunomodulatory effect is complex as they can drive pro- and anti-inflammatory responses. The anti-inflammatory function of IFN-I is beneficial in the treatment of the relapsing-remitting form of multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune neurodegenerative disease. Conversely, a deleterious effect of IFN-I has been reported in different types of inflammatory diseases and upon chronic antigen exposure. Our main interest is to decipher signaling and molecular mechanisms underlying the shaping effect of IFN-I on the development of anti- and pro-inflammatory CD4 T cell subsets. We are also interested in pathophysiological mechanisms operating in immune disorders.
