L.A. joined the PMI department in March 2016 as a Post-Doc involved in the TBVAC2020 consortium and is focused on impacting vaccine design by understanding protein secretion of pathogenic Mycobacteria. The PE and PPE proteins are the two largest sub-groups of mycobacterial secreted proteins and the vast majority of these proteins is secreted by the ESX-5 secretion system. During his PhD with the group of Wilbert Bitter in Amsterdam, L.A. was able to uncover biological roles for the ESX-5 system in nutrient uptake, capsule integrity and modulation of virulence. In the lab of Roland Brosch he aims to translate these findings towards new vaccine candidates and to create more understanding of the PE and PPE proteins through comparative genomics and biochemical and immunological investigation.
