A little guide for advanced search:

  • Tip 1. You can use quotes "" to search for an exact expression.
    Example: "cell division"
  • Tip 2. You can use + symbol to restrict results containing all words.
    Example: +cell +stem
  • Tip 3. You can use + and - symbols to force inclusion or exclusion of specific words.
    Example: +cell -stem

We are looking for a project manager to coordinate the development of an international community of microbiological research and surveillance on priority antimicrobial resistant pathogens, in partnership with the Pasteur Network and other institutes in Africa mainly. While the network operates mostly in French speaking countries, interactions with English-speaking partners is an important objective.

The job will involve developing activities of the network and building contacts with collaborative stakeholders such as WHO or African CDC; organizing online or physical training events (tutorials, workshops), dissemination of genomic sequencing advances; and project management activities.

Context and objectives.

In Africa in particular, the consumption of antibiotics is poorly controlled and resistance can lead to therapeutic dead ends potentially responsible for excess mortality. The position is created in the context of two France-Africa collaborative projects, SARA and CircUs.

The SARA project (Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance in Africa) is an integrative project of the Pasteur Network. SARA aims to contribute to define strategies to combat antibiotic resistance by creating a dedicated surveillance and research network. The main activity of the SARA project is to collect, integrate, analyze and characterize data on antimicrobial resistance phenotypes, pathogens and genetic mechanisms in African countries, using clinical laboratory data, a One Health approach, data sharing, genomic sequencing and training and capacity building activities.

The CircUs project is funded by the French National Agency for Research through the Low and Middle Income Countries collaborative axis of the Priority Programme on Antimicrobial resistance. The general objective of the CircUs project (Circulation of multi-drug resistant Enterobacteriaceae in humans, animals and in the environment in rural, peri-urban and urban areas in low-and middle-income countries: a One Health approach) is to characterize the circulation of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and their mobile genetic elements across niches in Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ivory Coast and Madagascar.

To push these two projects forward, a project manager is required.

Missions

– To manage all aspects of the SARA project relevant to community building and networking, training, dissemination of genomic sequencing, and research sub-projects;

– to be the focal point of the CircUs project for Institut Pasteur, liaise with the project coordinators and French institutions (IRD, CIRAD; INSERM) on antimicrobial resistance activities at the international level, and organize the genomic analyses tasks;

– To organize trainings on the genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance; both online and physical; for global public Health / One Health actors and medical microbiology labs.

– Community building and networking: liaising with collaborators in both projects, and with external interested parties, including microbiologists, epidemiologists and public health actors in different sectors (clinical, food, veterinary) at the international level, with the aim of strengthening international collaborative links and securing future funding.

– To contribute to genomic data analysis in the context of epidemiological surveillance and microevolution of pathogens and their resistance;

– To contribute to the strengthening of other international collaborations of the Brisse group, including looking for additional funding and contributing to grant applications.

Profile

– Young scientist (PhD and ideally post-doctoral experience) in genomic epidemiology of pathogens, or professional with skills in international community animation and with demonstrated interest and knowledge of infectious agents’ surveillance.

– Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and French (minimum C1 level).

– Experience in international scientific collaboration programmes.

– Excellent communication skills; strong ability for production of written and oral reports.

– Excellent teamwork capacity in a scientific environment.

– Capacity of fulfilling specific objectives and to work under tight deadlines;

– Forthcoming and open minded. Comfortable to work into a multidisciplinary, international team; prepared to travel internationally when possible.

– Excellent organisational skills.

– Comfortable working in a multicultural environment, with a high level of transparency, work ethics and in close interaction with his/her colleagues.

Environment. The job will be hosted within the Brisse group at Institut Pasteur, Paris, France. The project manager will work under the supervision of S. Brisse and in close contact with the international Direction of Institut Pasteur and the Pasteur Network, and collaborators (e.g., microbiologists, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, clinicians). Support from central administration services of Institut Pasteur (e.g., International Direction, Education Center, International Network of Institut Pasteur) will be provided.

Salary and contract. The monthly salary will correspond to the standards in France and will depend on the candidate’ experience. This is a fixed term contract for 18 months, but we expect opportunities for extensions. The position is available in November 2022 or slightly later, depending of the chosen candidate’s availability.

Application. Please send your application as a single pdf file to Sylvain Brisse (sbrisse@pasteur.fr) with a detailed CV, a cover letter and references.

Deadline. October 30th, 2022
