“On-chip micro/nanorobotic swimmers:

fabrications, characterizations and applications”

Abstract: Micro/nanorobotic swimmers can serve as alternative microfluidic tools toward biologic or biomedical applications. We aim to develop highly energy efficient and fully controllable on-chip micro/nanorobotic swimmers with remote controlled functions such as cargo transport and sensing. In this talk, I will introduce our recently developed micro/nanorobotic swimmers including their fabrications by two-photon laser 3D nanolithography, mechanical property characterizations by in-situ scanning electron microscope nanomanipulation, and their microfluidic applications. Two applications to simulate their future in-vivo and lab-on-a-chip applications are demonstrated. First, the micro/nanorobotic swimmer serves as mobile micromanipulator inside microfluidic device to transpose microscale objects. Second, we demonstrate their physical sensing applications inside microfluidic control platform.

Biography: Gilgueng Hwang obtained both M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees of Electrical Engineering from University of Tokyo in 2005 and 2008 respectively. Part of this Ph.D work was done by the collaboration (2 years of academic guest) with multiscale robotics group in the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS), ETHZ, Switzerland. From November 2008 to September 2010, he has worked as a postdoc in ISIR, UPMC, France. In October 2010, he joined to LPN (currently C2N) as CNRS tenured researcher (Chargé de Recherche). His research interest covers micro/nanorobotics, micro/nanofluidics, lab-on-a-chip, 3-D Helical nanobelts, in-situ SEM characterization, nanomanipulation, nanoassembly.
